Social Good Summit Lagos 2017 Examined the Impact of Technology on Sustainable Development
The Social Good Summit examines the impact of technology and new media on social good initiatives around the world. Held annually during UNGA Week, the Social Good Summit unites a dynamic community of global leaders and grassroots activists to discuss solutions for the greatest challenges of our time. The summit theme #2030NOW, asks the question, “What type of world do I want to live in by the year 2030?”

The maiden edition of the Lagos summit which held on the 28th of September 2017 at StartZone, Gbagada, Lagos, was a gathering of social innovators and community leaders around the theme, “Future in Focus: New Media as a Tool for Social Development.

The summit was focused on Goal 4 (To ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all) and Goal 8 (To promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all) of the Sustainable Development Goals.

While addressing the issue of education, Victoria Ibiwoye (ED, One African Child), who was one of the speakers said, “Quality education is about competence and literacy.” She also went on to emphasize that Technology needs to be integrated into learning for learners to have the ability to compete on a global scale.

The conversation surrounding the need to develop quality education was further linked to the economic growth of Nigeria, as the speakers voiced their concern for the need of an education that empowers learners be entrepreneurial leaders.

You should think of a way to make yourself a global person by solving a local problem with a global perspective @iamdayosamuel

“You should think of a way to make yourself a global person by solving a local problem with a global perspective”, says Dayo Samuel (Lead Consultant, Audacity2Lead) who was also a speaker at the Social Good Summit Lagos. While expounding the importance of technology on creating sustainable solutions, he also noted, “I struggled to build a business for 8 years but have been able to use new media to build my business within 3 years.  The summit was instrumental in inspiring the attendees to become creative in integrating technology with their social good Initiatives. One of the key feedback that was gotten from the summit had to do with the poor awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals amongst citizens.

I am confident that technology offer us endless possibilities as communities and as a nation. What we need is for more visionary leaders in their respective to be more deliberate about how technology can be leveraged upon to drive social development.
